TEACHER GUIDE
INTRODUCTION
Congratulations! You are a really great co-op teacher that is doing everything you can to prepare your students for success in the workplace. We are aware of the additional challenge of having an OYAP student and the inherent difficulties in finding trade placements, assessing them for safety and teaching your students to advocate for themselves in this type of work.
We know that your work as an OYAP co-op teacher changes the lives of students in a really tangible way. Attempting an apprenticeship without the support of yourself and a willing employer is a major challenge for students who have little experience or education in this specialized field of work. OYAP provides them with the opportunity to gain experience in the workplace, potentially go to a specialized technological education school, community college or union training centre to do their Level 1 training, and hopefully gain a valuable reference. These are three key components of becoming an attractive future employee.
YOUR ROLE AS CO-OP TEACHER SPECIFIC TO OYAP
Here is a breakdown of each OYAP program and the corresponding responsibilities:
REGULAR
SPECIALIZED
ACCELERATED
STEP TO CONSTRUCTION
STEP TO TRANSPORTATION
PACE
1. REGULAR OYAP
A student is doing a co-op placement in a trade.
You find the trade placement for your student. If you are having a hard time, please check in with your student facilitator - they may be able to assist you.
You complete the OYAP Participant and Registration Form (Section 1) and submit it along with your WEA to your student facilitator
If your student is committed to the trade and wants to register as an apprentice please submit the completed Section 1 and 2 of the OYAP form to oyap@tdsb.on.ca
2. SPECIALIZED OYAP
Your student may want to do a Specialized OYAP program at Central Technical School. They must apply by mid-June of the current school year in order to attend the following school year. It is a full-year program where your student will gain great knowledge and experience through multiple technological education credits in their chosen trade. Your student will transfer to Central Technical School and they will take it from there.
3. ACCELERATED OYAP
Your student has applied to Accelerated OYAP and has been accepted. Accelerated OYAP programs only run during the second semester (quad 3 and 4). Your student will be doing a co-op placement in their chosen trade with a qualified journeyperson. They will also be spending 8 weeks at a college or union training centre.
You find the trade placement for your student unless the student is going to training at a union (see chart below). If you are having a hard time, please check in with your student facilitator - they may be able to assist you. If you still require assistance please contact Matt or Shannon in the Central OYAP team.
Please submit the completed Section 1 and 2 of the OYAP form to oyap@tdsb.on.ca
The OYAP team will generate a Registered Training Agreement which will then be emailed to you. Please print and have page 2 (3 copies) signed by the apprentice (student), sponsor (employer), and parent/guardian. This hard copy can then be sent through interoffice mail to Adriana Huerta Lazo at 1 Civic Centre Court, 1st Floor.
You are responsible for the WEA, placement assessment and monitoring of the student
4. STEP TO CONSTRUCTION
Your student has applied to this central co-op program and has been accepted. They will be exploring the various trades in the construction sector on a high rise construction site. They will begin at Northview Heights and Elvy Moro and Ian Da Silva will take care of their training and placements, WEA, placement assessment as well as submitting their OYAP forms. Ian and Elvy also monitor the students.
